In the January-March period of 2024, online tourism expenditures in Turkey recorded a remarkable growth with a 140 percent increase in purchases made with domestic and foreign cards. According to the data obtained by Tourism Databank through the Interbank Card Centre (BKM), the total amount of expenditure in this period exceeded 103 billion TL, more than double the 43 billion TL expenditure recorded in the same period last year.
This increase was observed in various tourism services such as hotel, airline, car rental and tourism agency services, especially through online platforms. In addition, in the first quarter of 2024, hotel accommodation expenditures made with credit and debit cards increased by 130 per cent to 46.5 billion TL. This figure was 20.2 billion TL in the same period of the previous year, indicating a significant expansion in tourists' accommodation preferences.
Furthermore, analyses in dollar terms also show a significant rise in Turkey's tourism sector. In dollar terms, online tourism expenditures increased from $2.2 billion to $3.4 billion, while hotel expenditures rose from $1 billion to $1.5 billion. This represents a 40 per cent increase and demonstrates the growth potential of the Turkish tourism market on a global scale.
This data reveals that digital shopping and international tourism is a growing trend in Turkey's tourism sector. Moreover, the new opportunities that this growth creates for tourism sector investors and service providers further increase the potential in the sector. Such data also plays an important role in the planning and strategy development processes in the sector, thus contributing to the further strengthening of Turkey's tourism economy.
